In its present form, the sonata is the only one to be made up of five movements, and includes a sparkling harpsichord solo at its centre. For this reason it is the only sonata to open with an initial quick Allegro, which is marked by continuous passages of semiquavers. The initial ascending flourishes evoke trumpets - and their character recalls the second movement of the Sonata in A major. Mattheson qualified both those two keys as "brilliant". The final movement later revives this mood.

There are three intermediate movements, of which two are in E minor. Without a doubt this description fits the Largo, a succinct intermezzo which introduces the substantial solo movement, also in E minor. The Adagio is in the key of B minor and a little before the conclusion conjures up once again the melancholic atmosphere which opened the cycle. |
