This violin romance in G (known as "No. 1," but very possibly composed after "No. 2") was published as Op. 40 in December 1803 by Hoffmeister & Kuhnel in Leipzig; The solo violin dominates throughout, the orchestra providing a simple, serene backing. Although both works are apparently uncomplicated and song-like in character, (as a parallel one immediately thinks of the composer's "Adelaide"), they are far from easy to interpret. It has become frequent concert items for the world's great violinists from Fritz Kreisler, Misha Elman and Yehudi Manuhin to the young performers of today. Along with the Violin Concerto, they are Beethoven's only works in this medium.
