The history of Johannes Brahms's D major Violin Concerto op. 77 (1879) : there was the same problem of incomprehension in the face of the work's apparent excesses, the same hesitations on the part of potential performers, beginning with its dedicatee, the celebrated Joseph Joachim, who suggested a handful of retouchings (no doubt justified) to which the composer submitted with reluctance. The work has now found a definitive place for itself in the repertory. Never, perhaps, in the whole of Brahms's oeuvre did his characteristic full-blooded lyricism find such forceful and impressive expression.
