BENJAMIN BRITTEN stands pre-eminent among composers of his generation. No description can convey the unique sound of his musical personality, or the scope of his achievements in an uncommonly wide variety of musical forms. Born in 1913 in Suffolk, England, he began composing at 5. By the age of 12 Frank Bridge had become his teacher and remained his close friend for the rest of his life. At the Royal Academy of Music his principal teachers were John Ireland in composition and Arthur Benjamin in piano. He has composed in virtually every genre and must be considered the most prolific composer of our age. Outstanding are his operas Peter Grimes, The Rape of Lucretia, Albert Herring, Beggar's Opera, Billy Budd, and the monumental War Requiem. |
