Ole Bull finished his Adagio Religioso, which he also called A Mother's Prayer, in 1834. Bull's American friend Maria Child recounted the interesting story Bull told her about its composition. The monks in the Santa Maria Novella Monastery had asked him to compose a piece for them, which he agreed to do. "But progress was slow, and one morning they came to remind me that they had to have it the next day. I had not yet got up when they came. I had been up all night talking with the moon about Norway and other sad things. I promised that they would get it the next day. I got up, took the violin, and it sang my thoughts for me, with the moods from the night. I wrote the melody down, and as I saw before me a mother in prayer before an altar, praying for her child, I called it A Mother's Prayer.
