Two basic musical characters confront each other in The golden cockerel: the realm of Tsar Dodon, as a manifestation of domination and power, is characterised by dark, massive sonority, by "rhythms that tend to become fixed" (Neef) and the quotation of predetermined musical particles that signify rigidity and inflexibility, for example marches. The realm of the Queen of Shemakha, the "daughter of the air" who symbolises Nature, is represented by delicately coloured, airy, intangible-seeming iridescent chromatic sounds. In the golden cockerel composer brought to perfection his compositional method: so to relate a fable by tone-colours, characteristic harmonies and instrumental relationships "that each important situation and figure has its own characteristic sound aura.
