The title of Debussy's La fille aux cheveux de lin (The girl with the flaxen hair) is borrowed from the "Chansons Ecossaises" of French poet Leconte de Lisle. Like Mendelssohn and Verlaine before him, Debussy (1862-1918) was fascinated with the Romantic mystery of Scotland, its mixture of Celtic mythology and rugged natural beauty. This famous melody originated as one of the Preludes, Book One for piano; it was transcribed for violin and piano in 1914.
