Sonata da chiesa comprises four movements: a slow movement, usually homophonic in style, is followed by a fast fugal one; the third movement is again slow, usually in triple time, and providing for free elaboration; the finale is quick and almost always in either 12/8 or 6/8 metre. While the majority of the trio sonatas of op. 1 and op. 3 follow this pattern, in his violin sonatas Corelli changed the four-movement norm by introducing a shorter fast movement — usually a Vivace with continuous, etude-like figuration — which follows the first Allegro in four of the sonatas and precedes the finale in the other two.
