The Austrian-born Fritz Kreisler brings the violin virtuoso tradition into the twentieth century: he launched his international career on its brink, in 1899 in Berlin, at the relatively late age of twenty-four, having entered the Vienna Conservatory at seven and finished his formal training five years later in Paris. With his vibrato-full sound and seemingly effortless technical skill, he remained a byword for virtuosity until the end of his career in the late 1940s.
