Lutoslawski - Partita for violin and piano
Lutoslawski - Partita for violin and piano. You can download the PDF sheet music Lutoslawski - Partita for violin and piano on this page. The effectiveness of the violin writing is due partly to the fact that Lutosławski himself studied the instrument for several years before giving it up to concentrate on the piano. It is perhaps surprising that he wrote nothing for solo violin for more than 40 years; he remedied that in the 1980s, with the Partita. Originally for violin and piano, this piece was written in the autumn of 1984 for P.Zukerman and M.Neikrug. In 1988, Lutosławski made a version of it for violin and orchestra. The title "Partita" refers to the fact that the three main movements of the piece, the first, third and fifth, have some generalized similarity to three of the standard movements of the Baroque dance suite or partita: respectively the courante, air and gigue. These movements are separated by short interludes in which the violin and piano play "ad libitum", independently of each other; and there is a similar passage, played fortissimo throughout, in the last movement. These sections are incorporated into the orchestral version, giving the piano there a kind of concertante role. Lutostawski has orchestrated the rest of the piano part with consummate mastery, amplifying it with extra sustained notes and separating out the strands of the texture with different instrumental colours, to provide perfectly gauged support for the violin's sweet cantabile line in the central Largo, and its exuberantly energetic virtuosity in the outer movements.
