I. Adagio II. Menuetto. Moderato III. Rondo. Allegro assai
Sonata in E-fiat major, known to us as K. 58, which for years scholars and public opinion have held as the work of Mozart. Much as Mozart might have done himself, the composer of the E-flat sonata heard here followed the tradition of the "sonata for piano (with violin accompaniment)." Lavish attention is paid to the keyboard part, with the violin mostly confined to accompaniment figures, little bits of imitation, or sustained notes that fill out the harmony. The music itself shows the influence of older Italian composers, with more than a hint of the Baroque. Contrasts and changing moods abound in the first two movements, and the final Rondo with its dark episode in the minor displays a freedom that was very much a mark of its time. Questions of attribution aside, this piece, which has been dated approximately to 1772, bears many of the characteristics of Mozart as a precocious teenage composer. During the time in question, Mozart was touring Italy, hoping to break into the lucrative world of Italian opera, and one of his great prides was that he could produce a piece in any established style, taking another composer's score as a model and capturing its most salient features in a work of his own.
