I. Adagio - Molto allegro -Adagio - Molto allegro II. Tempo di Menuetto
This Is certainly one of the most unusual sonatas Mozart ever wrote. The opening Adagio looks like a slow Introduction, but the following Allegro does not start in C major. In fact, we have here a sonata exposition with two themes In different tempi. Instead of a development section, there Is only a short transition, the last bars of which prove that the tempo of the Allegro should be twice as fast as that of the Adagio.

The second and last movement Is Inscribed 'Tempo dl Menuetto'. When a finale bears this title, It usually means that it Is either a rondo or a somewhat more elaborate minuet with trio. Since In this case the first movement Is only an incomplete sonata form, the full weight of this formal principle falls on the second movement. Here, too, the treatment of the form Is very personal: the development section starts with the main theme, the recapitulation with the second. In the concluding section the main theme Is briefly quoted, the coda takes up a phrase which first appeared as a new element In the development — and thus the balance of the various components Is restored. |
