Composed in December 1785, the Sonata in E-flat major, K. 481, is one of Mozart's greatest works, fully on a level with the magnificent scores that immediately followed it: the Piano Concertos Nos. 22-24 and his opera The Marriage of Figaro. The virile yet congenial first movement contains a wealth of ideas, expounded in virtuoso interplays between violin and piano. Mozart varies the central Adagio's main theme each time it reappears: contrasted episodes provide exquisitely ornamented cantabile writing and lead through strange, labyrinthine modulations. In the finale, Mozart gives six variants of a popular Viennese-Parisian tune.
