With the first movement, a new world opens up. The brilliance of the D major Sonata (K306) is here combined with thematic material of great melodic intensity. Besides, it is one of the early instances of a sonata form with three themes — a device that is mostly attributed to Bruckner. The second of these themes is somewhat subordinate, but it gains in importance when its rhythmic structure is hinted at in the beginning of the development.
