Sonata in A major, K402, consisting of an Andante followed by a fugue in the tonic minor, remained unfinished. The design of its movements is similar to that of the opening half of the G major sonata, K379, a sonata-form slow movement which breaks off at the point where the recapitulation would have been expected, followed by a quick movement in the minor. In the sonata K402 the latter takes the form of a Handelian fugue on a chromatic subject initially given out by the violin on its own. The piece was completed by Maximilian Stadler.
