1. Allegro con spirlto 2. Allegro
The SONATA IN G MAJOR, K.301 (293a), was composed during Mozart's stay in Mannheim, while he was travelling with his mother, and published in Paris in 1778 as part of a set of six sonatas op. 1. All of those works have only two movements. Mozart breaks away from the style of Baroque sonatas, now favoring melody over counterpoint. This is manifested in the even distribution of melody between instruments, according it a dimension previously unknown in the genre. The violin part is no longer treated as a mere "accompaniment" to the keyboard part, but rather assumes an equal role, a development that would point the sonata - as a compositional form - in a more modern direction. This work opens with an Allegro con spirito, featuring an utterly inspired melody on the violin, which later is repeated in alternation with the piano. By writing "con spirito", Mozart suggests music overflowing with joy and demonstrating a lively and vivacious nature. The second movement is an Allegro - but this time in the traditional form of a rondo - with a beautiful minor-mode siciliana in the middle section.
