- Allegro maestoso
- Adagio
- Rondo (Allegro spiritoso)
Violin concerto No. 1 was said by Fetis to date from 1811, but it may well have been written some years after this, in 1817 or 1818. Paganini played it in Naples on 29 March, 1819 (perhaps for the first time), and it formed a staple part of his repertory from then on. He originally wrote out the orchestral parts in E flat, and in writing out the solo part in D and tuning the strings of his violin up a semitone he achieved an effect of added brilliance. Mozart had used the same device for the solo viola part of his Sinfonia Concertante in E flat for violin and viola, K. 364). The "grand military movement," with which the concerto begins, has a lyrical second subject, and the solo part abounds in passages in thirds, octaves, and tenths, and in harmonics. The Adagio (in B minor), which follows, is distinctly operatic in character, and alternately dramatic and lyrical in mood, and the concerto ends with a lively, piquant rondo, which demands from the soloist the same bravura and command as does the first movement.
