Prokofiev - Scherzo for violin and piano

Prokofiev - Scherzo for violin and piano. You can download the PDF sheet music Prokofiev - Scherzo for violin and piano on this page. This Scherzo (its violin transcription) is a part of a whole composer work, op.12. Ever since their appearance in 1913 the "Ten Pieces" Op. 12 have been among Prokofiev's most frequently played and best-loved piano works. He himself often gave this Scherzo as recital encore, and he included this Scherzo on his first commercially recorded discs in the early 1920s. He was also sufficiently pleased with the Scherzo humoristique to make a droll arrangement of it for four bassoons.

The prevailing good humour of the cycle op.12 arguably strays over the border into actual send-up in the case of the Mazurka and the Allemande. The mounting complexities of the Gavotte only just stop short of parody, while the same feature in the final Scherzo (echoing Chopin's famous В flat minor prelude) suggests, to my ears at least, more than a touch of strange — the composer himself found it quite a handful if his recording is anything to go by.
