Said to have been inspired by the blazing sparks of a forest fire, it is a highly virtuosic piece, just as much in its more languorous passages as in its impassioned moments. Saint-Saëns owed his perfect knowledge of the violin to the friendly advice offered by that latter-day Paganini, Pablo de Sarasate.
