Wieniawski - Violin concerto N2 Op.22

Wieniawski - Violin concerto N2 Op.22 . You can download the PDF sheet music Wieniawski - Violin concerto N2 Op.22 on this page. The Second Concerto was written towards the end of Wieniawski tenure as Court Violinist in St. Petersburg and published in 1870. Rather typical of Wieniawski, it is generously dedicated to his great Spanish contemporary Sarasate. The work is an amazing advancement upon the First Concerto.

From the opening tutti we hear how remarkably assured is the orchestration and symphonic argument, although it is the soloist's entry which is most revelatory - gone are the pyrotechnics, replaced by an expressive melody marked dolce ma sotto voce. The second subject too complements this opening statement and is not a showy contrast. Whilst there is a good deal of display writing it is never vacuous and always arises from a musical need (i.e. delicate tracery over the orchestral line during the development).

A massive orchestral tutti, splendidly confident, slowly melts into the start of the second movement in exactly the same manner as Bruch's G minor Concerto. This Romance, probably Wieniawski's most popular composition and sometimes played in isolation, is another example of his effortless and spontaneous melody and appears to be the raison d'être of the entire work. An attacca call to attention leads into the finale proper. Marked à la Zingara, it is the most extrovert movement: melodies come thick and fast, rhythms pulsate and the work is brought to a dazzling finale.
