Viotti has left us 29 violin concertos, written roughly between 1781 and 1808. With their wide range of stylistic and expressive nuances, they undoubtedly represent the apex of this composer's output. Noteworthy is Viotti's use - on would say extensive, for the times - of minor tonalities, especially in the works published after 1788. Viotti's violin works were as superior to anything ever written for this instrument as was his technique compared to that of his rivals. His solo works, in particular his violin concertos laid the foundation of the French violin school and were stylistic models much admired and imitated by composers such as Rode, Kreutzer and Baillot.
