The Chaconne was originally written for violin solo with figured bass and published in 1867 by the Hamburg violinist Ferdinand David. Tommaso Antonio Vitali was born in Bologna in 1663 (some sources give the year of birth as 1665) and died in Modena in 1745. He was the son of a famous musician of the time, Giovanni Battista Vitali, with whom he studied the violin. He himself was a violin teacher of distinguished pupils including DallAbaca and Senallie. His compositions include sonatas for two violins and continuo. He is generally considered to be one of the pioneers in developing the sonata form.
