Janacek - Violin sonata
Janacek - Violin sonata. You can download the PDF sheet music Janacek - Violin sonata on this page. Janacek's Sonata comes as much as Hindemith s from a troubled era, one that defined it even more forcibly, since the piece was begun in the summer of 1914, in the expectation and hope of a rapid Russian advance to free Moravia and other Slav regions from Austrian rule. The Sonata proved, however, as beleaguered as the Eastern Front, and Janacek kept working at it until 1921.
This violin sonata has a classical shape - sonata allegro, song, scherzo, finale (albeit slow) — but its themes are vocal in the Russian manner, and often Russian in their modalities. Janacek's typical engagement with motifs comes out, in the relationship the second subject here (introduced by the piano in octaves) has to the first, both extending from the same three-note pattern. Equally characteristic, and found throughout the Sonata, is the hurrying of expressive motifs so that they become ostinato segments or almost physical gestures - like the shudder or fist shaking of the finale, repeatedly breaking and countering the lyrical flow.
